The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the psychological situations of the cleft lip and/or palate patients' parents, discuss the relationship between the psychological situations and the cleft types, and provide clinical treatment to improve the psychological situations of these parents. We Select 100 parents whose children are proceeded the primary surgery treatment in West China College of Stomatology, Sichuan University during the year 2003 - 2004 to form the studied group. And these parents are divided into three subgroups (cleft lip, cleft palate, cleft lip and palate). We also choose 34 parents whose children are normal to form the standard group. All these parents are tested by the life eventscale and the self-rating anxiety scale as well. The LES scores suggest that both the total simulative scores and the negative simulative scores of the cleft lip and/or palate patients' parents are relatively high compared with the standard group. Meanwhile, the mother's scores are higher than the father's, and the results have significant difference (p<0.05). Among the subgroups, the scores of cleft lip and palate patients' parents are the highest and the scores of cleft palate patients' parents are the lowest and the results have significant difference (p<0.05). But the SAS total scores sign no significant difference between the cleft lip and/or palate patients' parents group and the standard group. (p>0.05). We analysis the SAS scores and find out that the possible early body symptoms of the cleft lip and/or palate patients' parents are anxiety, fear, nightmare, dyspepsia, stomachache, etc. This study suggests that the psychological situation of the cleft lip and/or palate patients' parents is always a negative psychological situation. But this kind of negative psychological situation may not manifest the body symptoms. Meanwhile, thethree subgroups' data have the significant difference, whichindicate that parents may more care about the appearanceabnormality.
