Objective This study was conducted to provide basis for the emotional support andpsychological therapy on parents of children with cleft lip/palate by investigating the spirit andbody states of their parents and discuss the effects of an an early psychological intervention onparents of children with cleft lip/palate by conducting early psychological intervention tothem.Methods Three self-administered questionnaires (CMI、FAD and SSRS) were appliedin102parents having children with cleft lip/palate, compared to126parents of healthyindividuals. One self-administered questionnaire (SCL-90) was applied in the above parentshaving children with cleft lip/palate, compared to the above126parents of healthy individualson the day of admission. They were given the psychological intervention duringhospitalization and3months after discharge. The questionnaire (SCL-90) was again applied tothem on the day of discharge and3months after discharge.Results Using the instrument (CMI), the answer scores of somatization such as eye andear、cardiovascular system、Skin and Nervous systems and the answer scores of mentalsymptoms such as depression、Sensitiveness、Rage and Tension were significantly higher thanthose of the control (P<0.05); Using the instruments (FAD and SSRS), the factors’scores ofparents of children with cleft lip/palate were significantly higher than those of the control(P<0.01). One self-administered questionnaire (SCL-90) was applied in the above102parentshaving children with cleft lip/palate, compared to the above126parents of healthy individualson the day of admission. They were given the psychological intervention during hospitalization and3months after discharge. The questionnaire (SCL-90) was again applied tothem on the day of discharge and3months after discharge.Conclusion In our study, the psychosomatic states of parents of children with cleftlip/palate is poor, and they acquire little supports of family and society. They should be givenactive reconstruction and intervening. Besides,it’s important and greatly significant that weconduct early psychological intervention to parents of children with cleft lip/palate and to thechildren’s psychosomatic health.
