OBJECTIVE: 1.To understand the maternal factors which influence the intrauterine growth before the delivery .2.To analyse the relations between the concentrations of epidermal growth factor (EGF) EGF and anticardiolipis antibodios (ACA)in the serum of mothers and umbilical cord and the intrauterine retardation growth (IUGR).METHODS: 1. 2250 cases of neonates live-born at the Department of obstetrics and Gynaecology ,the first hospital affiliated to Chongqing Medical Science University, from January 2003 to October 2004 were collected. The datas of the maternal age, height, weight, education, job, diseases et al during the pregnancy and the birth weights of the neonates were analysed. 2. Serum samples were collected from umbilical cord blood and mothers blood ,the concentrations of EGF and ACA were determined by ELISA. 18 cases of SGA,20 cases of AGA and 17cases of LGA were studied, and 20 cases of AGA as the control. SGA was defined as a birth weight or birth length less than the 10th percentile for gestational age according to gestational age-birth weights. RESULTS: 1. During the study period ,2250 live infants were born in the hospital .Of these 103 (4.6%)were SGA infants.Of these 1159 (51.5%) were boys and 1091 (48.5%)were girls . 2. The birth weights of the babies were affected by the complications of the mothers during pregnancy such as hypertension, heart diseases, and cholestasis etc, as well as the maternal education backgroud(p<0.05), but there were no relations between the gravidities and para and the birth weights of the babies . 3.
