Objective: To study the expression of Survivin gene in carcinoma of the esophagus and assay for clinical pathologyical significance. Methods: The expression of Survivin was detected in 30 cases of benign tissues of the esophagus, 50 cases of esophageal carcinoma tissues and tumor-adjacent normal tissues by Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) and its relationship with the clinicopathological parameters of carcinoma of the esophagus was disclosed. X2 analysis is used as the statistics method in this protocol. Results: The overall positive rate of Survivin expression in 50 cases of esophageal carcinoma tissues is 72%, and in tumor-adjacent normal tissues is 2%. No Survivin was found in 30 cases of benign tissues of the esophagus. The positive rate of Survivin expression has no relation to gender and age. The positive rate of Survivin expression in stage I , II ,111, IV esophageal carcinoma is 25%(2/8), 50% (5/10), 89.4% (17/19), 92.3%(12/13) respectively, it is 25%(2/8) in stage I of esophageal carcinoma, and 81%(34/42) in stage II ,111,IV (p<0.01), the expression of Survivin is higher in later clinical stages of esophageal carcinoma. The positive rate of Survivin expression in highly differentiated, neutral differentiated and lowly differentiated esophageal carcinoma is 68.4%, 72.7%, 77.8% respectively, it shows a trend of increase, but the difference among them is no statistical significance (P>0.05). The positive rate of Survivin expression in carcinoma of the esophagus with and without local lympth node metastasis is 93.1%(27/29) versus 42.8%(9/21),the difference between them is statistical significance (p<0.001). Conclusion: In this study, we found that Survivin is significantly increased in esophageal carcinoma tissues and gently increased in tumor-adjacent normal tissues, in contrast, it is undetectable in the benign tissues of the esophagus. It interpretes that the cell apoptosis result from the abnormal expression of Survivin affect the occurrence of esophageal carcinoma. The positive rate of Survivin expression is higher in later clinical stages of esophageal carcinoma. The positive rate of Survivin expression is higher in carcinoma of the esophagus with local lympth node metastasis than in carcinoma of the esophagus without local lympth node metastasis. The...
