With inflammation or atrophy mostly limited on gastric mucosa as pathological changes, chronic gastritis is supposed to be caused by repeated invasion of different kinds of pathological factors on gastric mucosa which may lead to gland cell atrophy, disappearance or even precancerous intestinal metaplasia. As a common-seen disease, chronic gastritis has been paid attention to by more and more scholars. However, control of inflammation on gastric mucosa, prevention of atrophic gastritis turned into cancer and recurrence of the disease are still puzzling in clinical practice.TCM has accumulated enormous experiences of herbs, acupuncture, massage, etc. for chronic gastritis with improvemed knowledge of the disease's pathogenesis and innovation of treatment. For chronic gastritis, thread embedding in acupoints has been found with satisfying curative effects, which take place by acupoint anesthesia, acupunctue, pricking-blood and constant stimulation of the thread in acupoints. In this clinical study, curative effects of thread embedding in shu and mu acupoints were evaluated with SF-36 form (The Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey) and spleen-stomach scale (PRO), EGG, pathological examination of the gastric mucosa and gastrointestinal hormone, which made the study innovative to some extent.92 patients from the acupuncture department of the 1st affiliated hospital of Guangzhou University of TCM were selected according to strict diagnosis standard, adopting norm and exclusion criterion, with 47 cases in the shumu acupoints thread embedding group and 45 cases allotted into the shumu acupoints acupuncture group. All cases were treated by the same acupoints as zhongwan, weishu, zusanli, and Ashi acupoint, while ganshu, qimenadded for stomach-liver incoordination cases, pishu, zhangmen added for spleen-stomach weakness cases, and geshu, pishu for stomach-collateral blood stasis cases. Cases in the first group were treated by local anesthesia then embedded with 0.8-lcm long threads on the specified acupoints by the use of No.9 lumbar puncture needle. Thread embedding was conducted once every week with the total treating course lasting up to 10 weeks (70 days). Cases in the acupuncture group were simply acupunctured on the prescripted acupoints with Huatuo brand acupunctue needles which were first manually manipulated then connected with G6805 electro-acupuncture apparatus set on 80 Hz frequency and continued output for 30 minutes. Acupuncture group cases were treated twice every week with the total course up to 10 weeks (70 days). All cases were evaluated by SF-36 form and spleen-stomach scale, and checked by EGG, pathological examination of the gastric mucosa and gastrointestinal hormone. Results of the study were indicated as follows.1. Clinical curative effects: All cases were evaluated by the curative effects criteria set according to 'Guideline for Clinical Study of New Herbs' and 'Agreement of Chinese Chronic Gastritis Seminar'. 16 cases in the first group were found recovered with the cure rate as 34.04% which predominated that of the acupuncture group as 20%. Effective rate of the thread embedding group was found as 89.36%, which was better than that of the acupuncture group as 80% (P<0.05). Stomach-liver incoordination cases showed better responses (effective rate: 91.3%) to thread embedding than spleen-stomach weakness cases(effective rate: 86.67% )and stomach-collateral blood stasis cases (effective rate: 77.78%). Curative effects of thread embedding were also found related with the disease course as follows: the shorter the course, the better the result.2. Side-effects : Side-effect rate (8.51%) of the thread embedding group was higher than that of the acupuncture group (2.22%), which implied that thread embedding required strict manipulation.3. EGG: Cases treated by thread embedding had their EGG's Ap, Fp, Fc and Fz significantly improved.4. Pathological examination: All cases were found gastric mucosa hyperaemia, edema, erosion and bile back streaming (P<0.05 , P<0.01) significantly improved through...
