Objective: To study the relationship between the expression of multidrug resistance (MDR) gene, glutathione-S-transferase- (GST- ) and chemosensitivity in patients with ovarian carcinoma. Methods: By using the S-P immunohistochemistry, it was detected that the expression of the MDR1 and GST- in 85 cases of epithelial ovarian cancer tissues, 30 cases of benign ovarian tumors and 20 cases of normal ovarian tissues. Results: Out of 85 cases of ovarian cancer tissues, 35 (41.2%) were demonstrated to be positive expression with MDR1, but all 20 cases of normal ovarian tissues and 30 cases of benign ovarian tumors tissues were negative, and there had significant difference between the ovarian carcinoma and normal ovarian tissues, benign ovarian tumors (P<0.05). There was no direct correlation between the expression of GST- , MDR1 and clinical pathological type and differenciation degree. 42(42/55) of GST- negative ones were chemoresistant; while only 2(2/27) of GST- negative ones were chemoresistant. 22(22/35) of MDR1 positive cases were chemoresistant. While only 8(8/50) of MDR1 negative ones were chemoresistant . The difference in the chemotherapratieresponse between the two group 28 was obvionsly signficant(P<0.05). The survival peniod of the patients with :GST- it positive expression was also obvionsly shorter than that of those with GST-negative expression(P=0.004). Conclusion: The overexpression of MDR1, GST- was correlated with acquired drug-resistance in patients with ovarian carcinoma. Mrasurement of the expression of MDR1 ,GST- in patients tumour may be of value chinically in detecting drug sensitivity and predicting prognosis. The results strougly suggest that GST- it expression in epithelial ovanian cancer tissues is closely related to chemoresistance clinically and it maybe serre as a useful marker to predict the prognosis of patients.
