Objective: To study the curative and preventive effects and mechanism of HuoXueLiSui Method (HXLSM) on traumatic proliferative vitreoretinopathy in rabbits.Methods: 40 rabbits were selected randomly from 50 rabbits and induced to traumatic proliferative vitreoretinopathy models, then divided into four groups: the first group was treated with San Xue Ming Mu Tablet-Huo Xue Li Shui (HXLS) group,the second treated with Tao Hong Si Wu Tang-Huo Xue Hua Yu(HXHY) group,the third treated with Zhu Ling San-Li Shui Ming Mu(LSMM) group and the model 'group .The rest 10 formed the blank control group.After the rabbits had been fed and administrated for a month ,we observed the visibility of fundus, the degree of PVR and pathologic changes ,measured the levels of basic fibroblasts growth factors (bFGF), epidermal growth faltor (EGF) andintercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in vitreous.Results: Compared with model group ,the confent of bFGF and EOF was decreased significantly in HXLS group (p<0.01).There was no significant change 'compared with the confent of EGF in blank group(p>0.05),the levels of bFGF was higher than those in blank group (p<0.05). The levels of ICAM-1 in HXLS group were evidently lower than those in model group, and had highly significant difference (P<0.01). Compared with blank group , the levels of ICAM-1 in HXLS group were higher (P<0.01). The level of bFGF EGF and ICAM-1 in HXLS group were lower than those in HXHY and LSMM group. The PVR in HXLS group was lighter than that in model group HXHY and LSMM group.Conclusions: HXLSM could inhibit and cure the formation and development of traumatic PVR by decreasing the level of bFGF EGF and ICAM-1.
