The study consisits of two parts :(1) to study the alterations of erectile function and nNOS-containing nerve fibers in corpus carvernosum and expression of eNOS in internal iliac arterial ligation rats; (2)to study effects of growth hormone on the erectile function and number of nNOS- containing nerve fibers in internal iliac arterial Ligation rats.(1)Objective: To investigate the effect of bilateral internal iliac arterial ligation on nNOS-containing nerve fibers and eNOS in corpus cavernosum of rats. Methods: Fourty-five two-month-old male Wistar rats were divided into sham operated group (21)and operated group(24).Operated group was made a rat model of arterial erectile dysfunction by ligating bilateral internal iliac arteries of rats .Sham operated group ,as a control group ,was only opened belly without ligating bilateral internal iliac arteries. Each group was sacrificed for detection of nNOS-containing nerve fibers and eNOS after erectile function test at planned time .Results: Significant difference exists in erection frequency and the number of nNOS-containing nerve fibers and eNOS expression between operation group and sham operation group (p<0.01). And it was also of significant difference in the number of nNOS-containing nerve fibers and eNOS and erection frequency between the operated groups(p<0.01).Conclusions: The erectile function and number of nNOS-containing nerve fibers in operated group were dramatically affected by bilateral internal iliac arterial ligation .The decreasing of nNOS-containing nerve fibers and eNOS expression may be one of the mechanisms underlying erectile dysfunction after bilateral internal iliac arterial ligation.
