Clinical pharmacy arises at 1960s around the world including China. However, during the past years, the clinical pharmacy in China developed little and showed great imbalance among deferent institutions. Compared to foreign countries, the clinical pharmacy service in China is rather inadequate. One of the most important reasons is that domestic medical institutions (both general and special hospitals) haven' t established any incentive system to encourage clinical pharmacists so that they will be engaged in the work. In the time of knowledge-based economy, it is well known that qualified person is the most important capital. Clinical pharmacists should get rational and invigorative reward corresponding to their work. Hospital managers have realized this and in some foreign countries such as USA, Japan and Australia, the incentive system has been established and got notable effects on decreasing occupational shortage, providing pharmaceutical service and promoting comprehensive competition. The study has systematically got deep into the established incentive system of other countries, and got creditable information about clinical pharmacy and clinical pharmacists' profession in the country through sending out questionnaire to eleven most famous hospitals. The survey collected the information including the pharmacist' job satisfaction, the attitude and opinion toward job and advice on incentive program. On the base of survey and investigation of foreign experience, the recommendation of Chinese clinical pharmacist' s incentive system was presented.Main results of the study including: 1) most pharmacists' annual income is equal to their annual payout, and pharmacists think that salarylevel at present is irrational and has poor attraction. Almost all clinical pharmacists are unsatisfied with their salary. 2) clinical pharmacists have no priority in career development, promotion, continuing education, and so on. 3) Domestic hospitals should establish an efficient incentive system on the base of performance appraisal. Conclusion: the incentive system has shown dramatic influence on the improvement of clinical pharmacy, and its impact is expanding around the world. It is the necessary choice for our country to set up a rational incentive system about clinical pharmacists at the time of knowledge-based economy. The incentive system should including several aspects , such as pay, profession promote, continuing education, evaluate performance, and so on.
