Objective: To explore the relation between pulse and traditional Chinese medicine syndromes and the severity of coronary artery stenosis (CAS) . Methods: different pulses and pulse-grams were studied in 480 coronary heart disease patients with different traditional Chinese medicine syndromes to study the relationship between different pulses and seven key TCM syndromes, including stagnation of phlegm, stagnation of blood, stagnation of qi, deficiency of qi, deficiency of ying and deficiency of yang. 19 patients was divided in two groups according to the severity of CAS, to study the relationship between the severity of CAS and the pulse parameter. Result: The results verified the rightness of the main pulse theory in traditional Chinese medicine. Besides, we found some new phenomena, e.g., there are no significantly difference between the knotted pulse, the regularly intermittent pulse, the abrupt pulse and the bird-pecking pulse, which do not coincide with the TCM pulse theory. Some pulses have negative diagnostic value to some specific syndromes, which was not reported before. Different pulses have different diagnostic efficacy for the same key syndrome. The theory basis of conclusion whether abandon the patients pulse or their symptoms while the pulse contradict the symptoms lies in the pulses' common low sensitivity and high specificity. The pulse parameters w/t was found to be positive relation to the severity of CAS.Conclusion: (T)the main TCM pulse theory can be used in the differentiate the syndromes of cororary heart diseases. (2)Some pulses have negativediagnostic value to specific syndromes. Different pulses have different diagnostic efficacy for the same key syndrome.(DThe basis of conclusion whether abandon the patients pulse or their symptoms while the pulse contradict the symptoms lies in the pulses' characteristic diagnotic efficacy value. The pulse parameters w/t has diagnotic value to the severity of AAS in some degree.
