Objective: More and more experiments show that there were plenty of leukocytes to gather in the infarction zones in acute phase of cerebral infarction patients, which produce inflammatory reactive intercellular adhesion molecule - 1 (ICAM-1). The latter plays an important role in the process of the inflammation. At the same time, the local blood circulation of ischemia was disordered and blood coagulant function was abnormal. The aggravated damage of nervous function with inflammatory reaction interacted the latter. The purpose of the research is to explore the relationship between the concentrations of circulating soluble ICAM-1 (sICAM-1) and several coagulative factors in the acute ischemic stroke patients, and to understand the underlying clinical meaning. Sujects and methods: In this research we collected the patients admitted to the department of neurology in the Datong Third People's Hospital. The group consisted of 69 patients with acute ischemic stroke. Blood samples were drawn on the next morning after they admitted. The coagulative factors were tested, which include prothrombin time ( PT ), activated partial thromboplastin time ( APTT ), thrombin time ( TT ), the concentration of fibrogen( FIB),platelet ( PLT ) and white-blood-cell (WBC). The levels of sICAM-1 were measured by means of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay ( ELISA) . The control group consisted of 30 voluntary health people whose age and sex were matched with the patients group. Results: The serum sICAM-1 concentration and FIB content from brain infarction patients were obviously higher when compared with those of the control group, which showed statistical significance (P<0.01; P<0.01). PT calibration frequently prolongs (P<0.05 ); sICAM-1 content with block area submit positive barrier ( P<0.01 ). The levels of sICAM-1 in the patients who had the history of hypertension were higher than those who had not suffered from hypertension. Conclusion: Serum sICAM-1 levels in acute infarction patients increase obviously. Furthermore, serum sICAM-1 levels are positively related with serum FIB content and the scope of cerebral infarction. The further study on sICAM-1 in ischemic stroke patients will be promising in understanding its underlying role.
