Objection:To evaluate the effect of traditional Chinese and western medicine on multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and explore new threatmemt. Methods:We conducted a prospective case-control study 60 MODS patients in ICU during March, 2003to February, 2004. 30 patients in control group were treated with normal western medicine alone, however 30 patients in treatment group were treated with western medicine combined with XueBijing Zhusheye.Patients' clinical status and outcome were observed.meanwhile the blood levels of endotoxin(LPS),human leukocyte antigen-DR(HLA-DR), Protein C activity(APC), prothrombin time(PT) Nkaolin partial thromboplastin time(KPTT),fibrin degradation products(Fib)and white blood count(WBC) were monitored on the day 1, 3, 5, 7 respectively.Result: Plasma level of LPS> HLA-DR. APC, PT, KPTT, Fib, WBC were not markly difference on the day 1,3 (P>0. 05) .However the level of LPS, PT,KPTT,Fib,WBC was significantly decreased, and the level of HLA~DR, APC was apparently increased in treatment group compared to control group(P<0. 01). between control and treatment group the 28 days survivalrate was signifisant difference (P<0.01) ,but the mortality rate wasnot statistical difference (P>0.05) .ConclusionrXuebijing combined with normal western medicine canregulate immune function, the balance of coagulation, inflammation andfibrinolysis.
