To investigate the morphological effect of Viscoat and Healon 5 on the epithelial cells of rabbit lens( LECs).MethodsIncision was created at the corneoscleral limbus just after the rabbit was killed. And the two kinds of the viscoelastic were respectively injected into the anterior chamber of both eyes. After 1, 3 or 5 minutes, cornea was removed, and lens was took out and fixed. Tissue was examined by light microscopy. At 40 magnification, the sample was cut into 3 sections, and the cell count of 3 fields of vision in the each section was carried out.ResultIn Viscoat group, the morphology of the LECs changed significantly. The cells became slated and partly wrinkled. The nuclear dissolution and intracellular vacuolization were also found. In Healon5 group, the morphology of the LECs changed slightly which was similar to that of the untreated control group. In Vis-coat group the cells count after 1, 3 and 5 min are 119.8+8.3(n=6), 118.3 +9.6(n=6), 119.7+5.8(n=6). In HealonS group, are 135.7+5.2(n = 6), 135.3+10.8(n=6), 136,2+4.6(n=6). The control group is 140.3 + 8.2(n =6). The statistic analyses showed that between viscoat and control, or viscoat and healon5 groups, the differences were significant( P <0.005). There were not significant differences between Healon5 group and normal controlgroup, and groups of the same viscoelastic with different time(p >0.05).ConclusionViscoat induced significant morphological changes in rabbit LECs. But Hea-lon5 not. The changes of the cells were not influenced by the reserving time.
