| Gastric cancer is the most usual malignant tumor in the world. The mortality of gastric cancer is in the first place among all the malignant tumor in our country. So it is quite important to seek new prevention and therapy method of gastric cancer in our country.Apoptosis plays an important role in cellular malignant transformation. The escaping mechanism of apoptosis in tumor cell is a hot spot in molecular oncology. Apoptosis abnormality also exists in the gastric cancer development. Survivin is a new member of inhibitor of apoptosis protein ( LAP) family. It doesnt express in most mature tissue, but expresses in most malignant tissues, which suggests it may promote the growth of cancer cells through inhibition of cancer cells apoptosis. Lu, et al reported the positive rate of survivin protein in gastric cancer is 34% , suggested the high expression of survivin may inhibit the apoptosis of gastric cancer cell and promote the growth of gastric cell. We detected the expression of survivin protein in 80 gastric cancer cases by immunohistochemical method, to discuss the association of survivin expression with clinicopathological parameters of gastric cancer.Methods80 cases of gastric cancer tissue were from Department of Oncology, the 1st clinical hospital of China Medical University from 1990,1 to 1997, 12. Cancer tissue and adjacent normal tissue were resected simultaneously. S-P immumohis-tochemical method were used. PBS was used to replace the first antibody for negative control, adjacent normal tissues were stained for normal control. Semi-quantitative scoring method and quantitative method by figure analysis were used to calculate the positive rate and expression level of survivin protein. The SPSS 10. 0 for windows software was used for statistical treatment.ResultsSurvivin protein were found in cytoplasm of gastric cancer cells. The posi-tive rate of survivin in 80 cases of gastric cancer tissues was 53. 8% , while that in normal gastric tissues was only 2. 5%. There was significant differencer be-tween these two values. The positive rates of survivin protein in different differ-entiation gastric cancer tissues had significant difference(P <0. 05) ,, but that in different TNM stage, gross type growth pattern and lymph node metastasis had no significant difference(P >0.05). The mean absorption value of survivin pro-tein in gastric cancer tissues was 0. 3721 0. 0342, that in normal gastric tis-sues was 0. 0246 0. 0039, there was significant difference between these two value. There was significant difference between the expression levels of survivin protein in different differentiation gastric cancer tissues (P < 0. 01). There was also significant difference between the expression level of survivin in lymph node negative and positive gastric cancer tissues (P <0. 05). There were no significant difference between that in different TNM stage, gross type and growth pattern gastric cancer tissues.DiscussionGastric cancer is the most usual malignant tumor in our country, the mortality of gastric cancer is in the first place among all the malignant tumors. Survivin was found in embryonic tissues of mice andhuman beings. It was also found in most human tumors. It was found only in thymus and basement layer of colon in human beings.Survivin played an important role in tumor genesis and development. Many in vitro experiments showed that it expressed in many transformed cells and lung cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer and breast caner.There are also some reports on survivin expression in gastric cancer.
