Lung cancer, origin from epithelial cells of mucous membrane of bronchus, with the mortality rate of 50-80/100 000, is one of the most familiar malignant tumors. About eighty percent patients died within a year after final diagnosis. The five years existence was less than ten percent. Nearly thirty years, the mortality rate of lung cancer in our country was the lead of all of malignant tumor. As other familiar malignant tumors, the high mortality rate of lung cancer was associated with it's high metastasis rate. Ninety percent died from complications correlating with metastasis. So invasion and metastasis were still the most hate killer. The study on mechanisms of invasion and metastasis of tumor cells received more and more consideration. Thereinto, the role of cell adhesion molecule on tumor's invasion and metastasis became fult in recent.Cell adhesion molecule(CAM) mediate interconnection of cells to cells or cells to extracellular matrix. CAM , majority of them are glycoprotein, distributed over cell surface, take part in cellular signal conduction and activation, extension and motion, growth and differetiation through leading to the adhesion of cell to cell or cell to extracellular matrix or cell-extracellular matrix-cell which mediated ligand-receptor interaction.Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry were used to detect the expression of H-cadherin and CD44s and ICAM-1 in 42 non-small cell lung cancer and controlled groups(42 paracancer normal tissue). The following conclusion were obtained:1. Compared with control groups, the expression of H-cadherin was obvious deleted or downregulated and the expression of CD44s and ICAM-1 were obviously increased in 42 tumor tissues. The aberrent expression have no relation with the pathologic type and differentiation degree of non-small cell lung cancer.2. There is no relations between the deleted or downregulated expression of H-cadherin and lymph node metastasis of patients. But the expression increase of CD44s and ICAM-1 were associated with lymph node metastasis of patients, the expression of CD44s and ICAM-1 increased in the patients who had area or mediastinal lymph node metastasis. It showed that CD44s and ICAM-1 played very important function in process of NSCLC metastasis.3. From prognostic point of view, there was no apparent relation between the aberrant expression of the three CAMs and TNM stage. But there displyed a tendency that the expression deletion of H-cadherin and the expression increase of CD44s and ICAM-1 in â…¢ and IV stage were apparently more than the ones in â…  and â…¡ stage. That is to say, NSCLC patients often in late phase and the results were worst when the deleted expression of H-cadherin and the increased expression of CD44s and ICAM-1 occured at the same time,.4. RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry were two kinds of common methods at clinic to detect tumor surface markers. Results of detection by two methods were consistent. As to conveniency, RT-PCR took little time and had high sensitivity. However, application range of immunohistochemistry was more extensive. It doesn't suffer to the limitation which tissue specimen was fresh or not. Which method was to used depend on specific condition.
