Objective: To study the complications of mechanical ventilation. Method: 125 complications in 91 patients under mechanical ventilation were studied retrospectively. Results: the overall incidence of complications is 137.4%(125/91), including ventilator associated pneumonia, cardiac arrhythmias, abdominal distention, alimentary tract hemorrhage, diarrhea, mucus plug and asphyxia, hypotension, extremely deep intubation, gastric esophagus reflux, cerebral edema, renal insufficiency, ventilator dependence, airway mucus damage, cannula enters esophagus, laryngeal edema etc. The incidence of VAP is the highest one and its occurrence was related to patients' posture, age, the time of using ventilator long-term antibiotics, nasogastric tube and antacid etc. Conclusions: To decrease the incidence of complications by prevention and treatment of complications and also by mastering the indications of mechanical ventilation, using noninvasive ventilation rather than endotracheal intubation and tracheotomy as possible is important.
