In this study ,167 maternal plasma levels of human placental lactogen(HPL), pregnancy- specific β1- glycoprotein(SP1) have been measured both in normal pregnancies and in pregnancy complications in the late trimester pregnancy ,to probe into the value of these two hormones in judging the placental function and the fetal prognosis. The results show that the levels of hpl,sp1 were notable low (P<0.01) in the severe preeclampsia group, preeclampsia complicated Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) group, and low birth weight group. However, the levels of hPL,SP1 were high in the fetal macrosomia group. There were not significantly different between the mild and moderate preeclampsia group, oligohydramnios group and gestational diabetes mellitus(GDM) group.A significant positive correlation was seen between hPL and SP1 .The two values can be regarded as the placental functional indicators.Decreased serum levels of hPL and SP1 indicate hypofunction of placenta.
