Objective:by microscopical study of the femoral articular cartilage of the ovariectomized rats,it showed the degeneration of the articular cartilage with the decrease of the estrogen. Then we isolated chondrocytes to culture in different conditions and developed MTT to show the effect of the estrogen on the chondrocytes. Methods: 1.90 female Waist rats randomized into 3 groups, they were normal control group, overiectomized group, and giving Livial group. Every 30 days killing 10 rats in every group, then making slides and staining with H.E. and safrinO,we calculated the thickness, grayness of the articular cartilage, and the number of the chondrocytes.2.We isolated chondrocytes from the 1 month old Newzealand rabbits and cultured it in different conditions and then developed MTT.Results:!.The normal group and the Livial group have no changes in thickness, grayness, and the number of the chondrocytes in three months observation, but the overiectomized group developed degeneration of the articular cartilage, the thickness of articular cartilage showed variant changes, the grayness increased while the number of the chondrocytes decreased with the time. The thickness of the surface layer of the articular cartilage decreased significiently in the overiectomized group, the thickness of the livial group is thinner than the normal, but thicker than the overiectomized. The grayness of the surface layer of the overiectomized is the highest, the Livial is higher than the normal, but lower than the overiectomized .2.5% Livial may increase the proliferation of the chondrocytes, but 10%Livial has no such effects.Conclusion:!.The decrease of the estrogen may lead to the degeneration ofthe articular cartilage,a certain concentration of the estrogen had the effect on the chondrocytes.2.Estrogen has the direct effect on the chondrocytes,an appropriate dose may stimulate the proliferation of the chondrocytes, too high dose may have the reverse effects.
