Acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are always the familiar critical illness which threatened mankind life. Especially once ARDS arises, it will be very difficult for us to cure the disease. In recent years, with the development of critical illness medicine and the establishment of intensive care unit (ICU) , many critically ill patients survived the strike. But with treatment going on, the probability of occurrence of serious infection increased and ALI or ARDS induced by infection increased too. As ARDS is difficult to cure , it is significant for us to prevent and treat ALI for fear that it becomes ARDS or multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) further. In recent years ,many scholars in and out of our country have been trying their best to find way to prevent and treat ALI and ARDS. But so far no powerful solution has been found. It has been proved in animal experiments that ALI which tumor necrosis factor (TNF) lead to could be improved by antibody of TNF and soluble TNF receptor. But it will be dangerous if they were used in clinic, because TNF is important in immune reaction and the immune function will be influenced and the opportunity of infection in hospital will increase if its biological activity wasblocked. Infection in hospital is an important reason which leads to death.Rhubarb is a kind of traditional Chinese herbal medicine .It has been a few thousands years that rhubarb was used to treat diseases. In recent years , many scholars have made a lot of pharmacology study and experiments with rhubarb and found its many pharmacological functions, such as diarrhea and restraining bacteria. In critically ill diseases , the research discovered that it has various significant pharmacological function .particularly in the prevention and treatment of acute stress gastrointestinal mucosa disease, ALI.SIRS and MODS...etc. Chendechang found that rhubarb could significantly decrease the occurrence of gastrointestinal failure and the level of TNF-@ and IL-6 in MODS.Although up to now the mechanism of ALI has not been demonstrated ,it was confirmed that ALI is a part of systemic inflammatory reaction syndrome ( SIRS) . Now that rhubarb has protective effect on SIRS and MODS, it also has protective effect on ALI. Some scholars have studied in this field and obtained positive result. But studying ALI resulted from abdominal infection with rhubarb has not been reported .At present, sepsis is thought to be the most important reason which lead to ALI or ARDS. The animal model of ALI or ARDS was usually obtained with a large dosage of endotoxin injection in vein in little time in the experiments of ALI .But this kind of model can not represent the process of ALI which results from infection. There is a lot of similitude in the process of ALI between the models which originate from abdominal infection and the critically ill patients in ICU. As rhubarb can protect the barrier of intestinal mucosa and clean bacteria and endotoxin in gut, the protective effect of rhubarb can not be brought into play in ALI experiments with endotoxin. In this study, the experiment was randomized, placebo-controlled. According to pharmacological function character of the rhubarb ,this animal experiments research is to observe its aegis function to animal model of ALI which results from abdominal infection and to study the functional mechanism of preventing and treating ALI.Materials and methods:Fed with the standard of cleanliness class in the animal center of Zhejiang Chinesetraditional medical college ,30 Sprague-Dawley (S-D) rats, weighing 250-350g, were divided into three groups randomly (A,B and C group ) .There were 10 rats in every group. A group was taken as normal control group; B group was taken as ALI group and C group was taken as rhubarb group. All rats fasted for 12 hours before experiment, but were not forbidden drinking. Each rat in group B and C was injected ketamine hydrochloride into abdominal cavity with the dosage of 100mg/kg. And then abdomen was opened,...
