Background: Evaluating curative effect of cervical spondylosis of vertebral artery type (CSA) at the level of patients as the whole is reseanabale and nessessary complementary to the existing criteria which is at the level of symptoms. Exisiting scale of self-perceived disablement in patients of CSA is too simple to detect functions of vestibular impairment.Purpose: To develop the scale including functional and emotional status of West Medicine and "zheng "of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) for evaluating curative effect of CSA.Objecs and Methods: In cross-section survery combined with prospected cohort study. 111 patients with CSA were assessed of exisiting curative effect criteria, the scale of self-perceived disablement including functional and emotional status, and the "zheng "of TCM in face-to-face format. 33 of them were re-evaluated after 3 weeks therapy and 14 of them were admistered the scale once again after 24 hours by different surveryors. The scale of "zheng" was developed and the finial scale were tested based on the principles of developing scales by SPSS 10.0.Results: 1. The final scale including 17 items has 3 subscales: functional, emotional, "zheng" of TCM. It has good face validity and construct validity ,highinternal consistency( a = 0.8759, 0.7478, 0.7293, 0.8796), and high test-retest reliability (r = 0.8603, 0.6932, 0.8061, 0.8237). 2. The finial CSA scale of TCM includes five quality variables and five qualitative variables. Conclusions: The scale has good face validity, high internal consistency, and high rest-retest reliability. It maybe useful for evaluating functional limitations and perceived handicap or disability before and after intervention and for helping patients becoming more realistic in understanding their own capabilities. At the same time, the article points out it is a practical and reseanable way to developing diseased-specific scales of TCM for evaluating curative effects that quality variables combined with qualitative variables which are formed based on principles of developing scales.
