The endoscopy is playing a more and more important role among the medical diagnostic instruments after developing over one hundred years. Its characteristics of high resolution and electronic imaging make the electronic endoscope irreplaceable in the clinical application.Modem computer technology, digital imaging and communication technology accelerate the application and development of Hospital Information System (HIS), Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and the Internet/Intranet. Digital endoscope workstation will be a part of the share resources of PACS as a result of the developing of PACS and HIS, which make it pre-requisite to set up the endoscope digital imaging workstation.Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM) standard offered a medical image communicating interface standard for different medical diagnostic and therapeutical instruments manufactured by different vendors. DICOM has become the international industrial standard in the field of hospital imaging and has been widely used in a lot of developed countries. An endoscope digital imaging workstation must transform the images and archives into DICOM format to communicate with PACS system inside or outside the hospital.On the basis of outlining the function, features and trends of medicalendoscopes, this dissertation puts its emphasis to introduce the designing method, function and structure of our developed endoscope imaging workstation. It analyses and resolves the reading and writing of DICOM format archives successfully. At the end of the thesis the forecast of our work and prospect of digital imaging workstations are dealt with.
