Objective:"Ib explore the relationship between apoptotic activit}', Hcl-2 protein,Bax protein and the biological bcheavior of basal cell carcinoma(BCC),and discuss thc nccessity of adopti()n of Scxton's subpathological criteria'of BCC in clinical practice.Methods:46 cases of BCC \vere diagnosed with regard to Sexton'ssubpathological criteria- ''hich ''ere then classified in non-aggressive andaggressive HCC groups. T[]NFI. technique and labeled- streptavidin-biotin method were pertbrmed on parat1in embedded sections of 46cases of BCC, apoptotic index(AI) were counted based on T[JNEI. resultand average optica1 density(AOD) was adopted to evaluated theimmunohistochemica1 result.AI- Rc1-2 AOD,Rax AOD-Bcl-2nsax werethen cornpared between the 2 grotlps of BCC. The correlation between AIand other parameters were als() studied \vithin the 2 groups of HCC.Res Il Its:2l cases of BC(: \\'ere classit1ed into non-aggressive L1CCgroup,xvhiIe the other 25 cases xverc c1assitied into aggressive BCC groups fBcl-2. Bax proteins were tlniversally expressed in ttlmor nests of BCC,Bcl-2 AOD, Bcl-2/Rax ''ere higher in non-aggressive HCC group thanthose in aggressive BCC group.while AI was lower in the 1brmer than thatin the latter, P values were 0.005.0.044,0.041 respectively; In thenon-aggressive groups, it showed negative correlation between AI andHcl-2 AOD, AI and Hcl-2/Hax, P values were 0.045,0.0I5respectively .while it lies no correlation between AI and other parametersin the aggressive group, P>0.05. The difTerences of Bax AOD showed nostatistically signiticance between the 2 groups, P values was 0.979.Conclusions:l. Sexton subpathological criteria might ret1ect the dit1brences ofbiological behevior of BCC.2. TUNEL method can be applied in retrospective research of apoptosisdetection of BCC. although it needs a few moditication. Also. takingmorPhological characters of apoptosis in count is recommended whenevaluating TUNEL positive stain.3. Bcl-2, Bax proteins might participate in the carcinogenesis BCC, BCCmLl} develop by resistaflce to apoptosis.4. The expression level of Bcl-2 protein. Bcl-2/Bax were higher innon-aggressive BCC than those in aggressive BCC. x'hile Al \\'as lox'erin the tbrmer than that in the latter. Bc1-2. Bax proteins might be theimportant regulators of diftilsed apoptosis of non-aggressive BCC,4t',hereas other thctors may play a role in the regulation of apoptosis ofaggressive BCC.
