Abstract Abstract The pharmacological effects of Gan Qing were studied in this paper, and the mechanisms were probed preliminarily. The results indicate that GQ possesses anti-inflammatoiy, antipyretic, analgesic, antiviral, antitussive, expectorant and immunomodulatoiy effects. It was observed that the ear edema induced by xylene in mice, the hind paw swelling induced by carrageenin and the increased nasal mucosa capilaiy permeability caused by histamine in rats were inhibited significantly by GQ. The swelling of paw induced by egg white and the weight of granuloma in rats were reduced by GQ only at high dose, yet the migration of leucocyte induced by CMC in mice was not changed by GQ. Fever induced by 2.4-dinitrophenol was significantly suppressed by GQ in rats. In rabbits. fever caused by Sal Typhoid Vi Polysaccharide Vaccine and endotoxin was also inhibited by GQ. However, the body temperature of normal rats was not changed markedly by GQ after administration. The writhing induced by acetic acid and the pain caused by formaldehyde were inhibited significantly, but the pain threshold was enhanced by GQ only at high dose in hot-plate test in mice. The proliferation of influenza A3 virus in M]E)CK cells was suppressed by GQ in vitro. In vivo, the lung index of pneumonia caused by infection influenza A3 virus was inhibited by GQ markedly, and so was the proliferation of influenza B virus in the lung of mice. The antitussive and expectorant effects of GQ were observed in mice. In addition, a tendency to stimulate the secretion of sweat w~s also found after administration of GQ at high dose in rats. The phagocytosing function of monocyte-macrophage system was decreased by GQ in normal mice, the depressed function of monocyte ?? Abstract macrophage system in mice treated with Cyc was recuperated to some degree, but not significantly. The delayed hypersensivity reaction resulted from DNCB wasn抰 obviously changed by GQ only showed an inhibitory tendency. The serum hymolysin and the hemolytic ability of spleen plaque forming cell induced by SRBC were enhanced by GQ markedly. In addition, the thymus index wasn抰 changed, but the spleen index was increased by GQ at dose of 3.30g/kg, Results showed that the anti-inflammatory effect of GQ may independent on adrenal system, but partly due to its inhibition of synthesis or releasing of the PGE, and the free radical. The antipyretic effect was concerned with its reduction the level of PGE, both in plasma and in hypothalamus.
