Objective: According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine: the "kidney"is concerned with the ear, Kidney Deficiency is closely related with hearing loss, the purpose of this study were : To study the correlation between Kidney Deficiency and auditory, so as to explore the characteristics of auditory about Kidney Deficiency. Then to investigate wheather Kidney Deficiency is more sensitive to the ototoxic effects of KM. Methods: Clinical study: 20 healthy subjects ,22 patients with Kidney Deficiency and 19 patients with Non-Kidney Deficiency were analysed with pure tones audiometry, SISI test, TD test and auditory brainstem response(ABR). Animal experiment one: Forty Guinea pigs were divided into group A, group B, group C and group 1) randomly, ten Guinea pigs in each group. In group A, group B,and group C, we set up Kidney Yang Deficiency model by using dehydrocortisone, at the same time ,group B nourishing the kidney with Decoction of Rehmanniae, and group C warming the kidney with Decoction of Shen Qi, so for 20 days sucessively, then rest 5 days, normal control group had no treatments. Animal experiment two: Guinea pigs were divided into four groups and set up Kidney Yang Deficiency as the same asanimal experiment one 7 completely ,but after 20 days ,all animals of four groups were explore to KM for 5 days. During the experiment , PR threshold, ABR wave I and III latency were recorded, after the experiment, the lesions of the basilar membrane of the cochlea were observed by light microscopy. Results: Compared with the healthy subjects and patients with Non-Kidney Deficiency, the patients with Kidney Deficiency had a hearing loss in high frequencies, SISI test score was high, ABR wave I , wave V latency and ILD were longer(p<0.05 ,p<0.01 ).After experiment, the differences of PR threshold between group A and D, group B and C was significant(p<0.05, p<0.01), the differences of damage to the inner hair cells of the basilar membrane of the cochlea was significant as while. Conclusion: Kidney Deficiency can induce damage to the cochlea both functional and morphology ,the hearing loss induced by kidney Deficiency was in high frequencies, with prolonged ABR wave I and wave V latency. Animals with Kidney Deficiency were more sensitive to the ototoxic efffects of KM. When using drugs of invigorating the "kidney"to treat hearing loss induced by Kidney Deficiency ,we should identify Yang and Yin of Kidney Deficiency.
