To find the epidemiological characteristic of toxoplasmosis in dogs and cats in Shanghai, and provide the academic basis for the diagnosis and the control of the toxoplasmosis effectively, the epidemiology investigation of Toxoplasmosis was carried out during the period of 2009~2010. To understand the infection status of toxoplasma , 713 serum samples were randomly collected from animal hospital and animal rescuer station for stray cats and dogs and IHA ( Indirect hemagglutination assay) method were used to detect the specific serum antibody. The results showed that 15.8% dogs and 9.7 % cats were toxoplasmosis antibody positive. To our surprise, the stray animals showed the highest antibody positive rate, 100%. Comparing the results of the data obtained, we inferred that toxoplasma infection may be associated with the diet, because stray dogs or cats are easy to get the pathogen, while domestic dog or, cats, as pets, living in the room and feeding with commercial food without raw meat, so the positive rate was very low.At the same time, also based on clinical symptoms and pathological lesions, combined with patient material smear staining, mice were inoculated, toxoplasmosis and other laboratory methods of separating a comprehensive diagnosis of toxoplasmosis. And positive samples were carried out by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of Toxoplasma gondii B1 gene and the 18S rRNA gene fragments。14.3 % in dog and 9.0 % in domestic cat serum samples were positive in PCR. The result is nearly the same to the IHA.
