Since the energy crisis is one of the hottest topic nowadays, it is very important of developing energy resources plantation to help solving the problem. Focused on one of the tree seedlings of major species for afforestation(Elaeagus angustifolia) in northwestern China, this paper deals with their growth and physiological properties under different soil water moisture content (70%~80%(CK), 50%~65%(T1),35%~45%(T2),20%~30%(T3)) and salt condition(0 mol·L-1 (CK), 0.1mol·L-1(K1), 0.2 mol·L-1 (K2),0.3 mol·L-1 (K3),0.4 mol·L-1 (K4) NaCl solution), which is to find the soil moisture and salt content that have notable negative effect on the growth and physiological process of Elaeagus angustifolia seedlings, furthermore, to provide scientific basis for expanding the planted scope of Elaeagus angustifolia plantation in the droughty and saline-alkali land in northwestern China. According to the indexes determined in the study, the conclusions are drawn as follows:1. With the decreasing of soil moisture content and the increasing of NaCl solution concentration, the data show characters of increasing at first and decreasing then in the indexes of the net photo synthetic rate, the transpiration rate, the chlorophyll content, the height incrementation, the caliper incrementation, biomass incrementation in both provenances of Elaeagus angustifolia seedlings. At water treatment Tl and salt treatment Kl, they reached the peak value. Processing in the T1 and K1, the Baotou provenance biomass is Chifeng provenances biomass 0.98 times and 0.92 times2,With the water and salt stress became more and more serious, the root to shoot ratio, which reached its minimum value at T1 and K1 treatments, increased at first and decreased then as a "V" shaped trend in both provenances of Elaeagnus angustifolia. In a T1 processing, the root to shoot ratio is 0.37 and 0.43. In a K1 processing, the root to shoot ratio is 0.69 and 0.55.3,The proline content of both provenances of Elaeagnus angustifolia, which increased as the experiment continued, increased gradually with the reduction of water moisture content and the augment of salt solution concentration at the beginning. And then, after 60 days of the treatment, proline content were T1>T2> T3> CK under water treatments, and K1> K2> K3> K4> CK under salt stress treatments with the stress level enhanced. Meanwhile, Compared to two provenances, Baotou provenance changes in the proline content of Elaeagnus angustifolia, respectively Chifeng provenance is the amount of Elaeagnus angustifolia change times and 1.01 times 1.10.4,As the water and salt stress became more and more serious, the malonaldehyde (MDA) content showed a "V" shaped trend in both provenances of Elaeagnus angustifolia, and droped to its valley bottom in treatments T1 and K1. Otherwise, as the experiments continued, the MDA content increased gradually in all treatments, meanwhile, Compared to two provenances, Baotou provenance changes in the MDA content of Elaeagnus angustifolia, respectively Chifeng provenance is the amount of Elaeagnus angustifolia change times and 1.16 times 1.09.5,In the water and salt stress treatments, with the increase of stress, two provenances of total nitrogen content was Elaeagnus angustifolia gradually reduce the total phosphorus content was increased and then decreased, total potassium content was gradually rising. Baotou Elaeagnus angustifolia provenances of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total potassium, the extent of the biggest changes is the Chifeng Elaeagnus angustifolia provenances 2.27 times the 2.32times,1.22 times and 1.22 times,2.13 times and 0.90 times.6,In general, both provenances of Elaeagnus angustifolia seedlings grew best under the soil moisture content that kept among 50%to 65%of the field capacity, meanwhile, the two provenances also behave best under the NaCl solution of about 0.1 mol·L-1 concentration treatment. In addition, it was the seedlings from Baotou that were greater effected by the water and salt stress.7. No significant difference about the calorific value was found between the two provenances of Elaeagnus angustifolia under these water and salt stress treatments.
