The survival and development of Environments human depends on Forests which are characterized by not only large spatial scale but also long life cycle, and a false decision perhaps make ecological catastrophe. In Virtual Forest Environments, complex forest objects are constructed; the laws of stand growth are presented and analized with computer graphics technology and forestry knowledge. So Virtual Forest Environments can provide a new way for forestry research due to its character of trying to exceed the limit of time and space.Based on the analysis of the contents and technical characteristics of different scale forest visualization modeling. The main research contents of the dissertation were as below: the design of single tree modeling, law of stand structure, forest scenery rendering etc. On the basis of study of related theories and algorithms, a large-scale virtual forest Environment prototype system was developed. The system used hybrid rendering as a main technology for modeling and rendering of the forest. The scene was built to represent the data structure of the models by octree subdivision, and to implement the following functions: large-scale virtual forest simulating and information query of Subcompartment. The experiment shows that it could offer a virtual environment for forest resource management.With the Chinese fir artificial stand in Huangfengqiao Forest Farm, Hunan, as the researching subject. Taking example for forest tending thinning, through the study on the theory and method of forest management measures visualization, an oriented forest management virtual forest prototype was developed. The system used forest inventory data as data source and implements the following functions: virtual forest roaming, and information query of Subcompartment and forest stand tending thinning etc. The experiment shows that it could offer a new platform for forest resource management and visualization of forest management.
