| Ningxia is one of the major pastoral areas in China. But many limiting factors, such as shortage of energy feed, protein feed and green forage, have seriously impeded the development of animal husbandry, and leaded to the problems, such as overgrazing, grassland degradation and desertification in this region. Northwest China including Ningxia is the centrally distributing area of winter fallow field. According to the statistics, the area of winter fallow field in this region is 370 million mu, accounting for 80% of the total cultivated area. So, how to adjust agriculture structure, to build a demonstration base for planting grass in winter fallow field and feeding livestock in Northwest China, and to explore scientific cropping and breeding patterns on the basis of stabilizing grain-production, are of great necessity for realizing the sustainable development of confined animal husbandry in this region. These also accord with the general requirement of strategic adjustment of agricultural structure and western development.Secale Cereale L Cv Wintergrazer-70 was introduced successfully into Taihu area of Jiangsu province from USA in 1979, and then introduced to Huang huai hai area, Yunnan and Guizhou plateaus regions, northwest and northeast areas in China. With high quality and yield, it has now become an important grass variety in the winter fallow field, orchard vacant land, sand wasteland and flood bed. In this study experimental site was selected in Ningxia province, and Cereale L Cv Wintergrazer-70 was planted at different zone types and rotation and multiple cropping patterns. The outputs and benefits of different planting patterns were analyzed and technical and management rules for cultivating Secale Cereale L Cv Wintergrazer-70 were stipulated. By choosing local dairy cows, sheep, layers and broiler as test target, the effect s of different feeding methods on feed intake, weight increment, milk yield, egg production, and product quality were also compared to explore scientific feeding regimes and mixed modes. After survey about the benefits of extending Secale Cereale L Cv Wintergrazer-70 and case studies, countermeasures and recommendations for the development of Secale Cereale L Cv Wintergrazer-70 in Ningxia were proposed.Conclusions are as follows:1. In Ningxia Secale Cereale L Cv Wintergrazer-70 behaves good cold tolerance in the winter-spring low temperature area and it also grows rapidly with high yield. To planting it can promote soil nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, and organic matters such as crop root systems, so as to improve soil fertility.2. Experimental results of continuous cropping and rotation between cereals and grass at different zone types showed that the comprehensive benefit of the zone type of 3.5 meters is better than that of the zone type of 2 meters, and the economic benefit of (rice-Secale Cereale L Cv Wintergrazer-70) - rice-Secale Cereale L Cv Wintergrazer-70 is the best.3. The experimental results showed that feeding dairy cow, mutton sheep, layer and broiler with Secale Cereale L Cv Wintergrazer-70 can increase significantly milk yield, daily weight gain of mutton sheep and that Secale Cereale L Cv Wintergrazer-70 can replace part of concentrate feeding for layers, and hereby improve the return rate of feedings and the product quality.4. While ensuring the feeding benefit, Secale Cereale L Cv Wintergrazer-70 can partly or completely replace other roughage. The larger amount it replaces will higher benefits of breeding be acquired. Feeding with mixture of Secale Cereale L Cv Wintergrazer-70 and straws in northwest China where green forage are extremely short in spring, can significantly improve the breeding benefits.5. Planting Secale Cereale L Cv Wintergrazer-70 in winter fallow field can make the best of light and heat resources in winter and spring, and solve the contradictions between cereals and grass planting. It also plays active roles in stabilizing grain-production, promoting animal husbandry development and increasing farmers' income.
