Agriculture is the foundation of the national economy and agricultural development has an important position in Chinese economy, but agricultural development must depend on the progress in science and technology. The agricultural machinery is the carrier to realize agricultural science and technology progress in agricultural production. Advanced agronomy must be supported by advanced agricultural machinery to increase yields and efficiency on a large scale and in a high-efficient and normalized way in agricultural production. According to the characteristics and actual situation in the dry farming region of northern China, based on an analysis of the features of the existing tillage implements in the country, towards the target of developing a bionic and intelligent soil preparation machine which can realize combined operation, a universal blade rotor has been developed through innovative design, which can complete both rotary tilling and stubble breaking, reduce energy consumption and manufacturing costs, improve the operating efficiency and save operating costs.Combined operation is a kind of operation technique that can complete agricultural cultivation with one machine at one time instead of several procedures with lots of plowing equipments. For instance, in traditional cultivation, people need machines like moldboard plow, disc harrow, ridger, and compactor to carry out operations like subsoiling tillage, raking, ridge forming, and soil compacting before sowing. But now one combined machine can accomplish all those tasks at one time.The combined machine shares following characteristics:1,shorten the interval and cycle of operation, improve operation efficiency, be favor to take the preemptive opportunities in farming season and fight against drought,2,reduce the times of tractor entering the field, lighten the pressure of machines to the soil, improve the quality of operation,3,make full use of the possessing power of tractors,4,save energy, cut down the investment in machines, enhance the utilization rate of machines, reduce the cost of operation, possess obvious comprehensive economic efficiency. The combined machine, with the structure of frame beam, intermediate gearing, can change speed through transmission case to meet the different demand of revolving speed in rotary tilling and smashing root and stubble. By fixing two kinds of blade into the same cutterhead of the roller, this machine can accomplish the rotary cultivation of paddy fields, cornfields and vegetable plot and also smash stubble of corn and broomcorn at the same time. The universal roller shaft with hollow structure was designed suitable for two-row soil preparation machine. The strength check of the roller shaft was conducted, and the results showed that it satisfied the strength requirement. In order to test the operational performance of the universal roller, field tests were conducted, and the results showed that the average rate of breaking soil is over 85.6% and the stability coefficient of the tilling depth is over 92.38%. In the stubble breaking operation, the average broken stubble cutting rate is above 81.04% and the stability coefficient is above 87.37%. The working quality can meet the requirements of follow-up sowing.
