It is important to live on moso bamboo(Phyllostachys pubescens)for people in mountainous areas, with high economic and ecological values. But there is so large proportion of low production and profit moso bamboo plantation. The program studied case on improving benefit by means of participatory technology development in Longquan .The main results are the following:1. The result of low benefit from moso bamboo plantation, is not only the low production but also the low profit, based on the result of participatory rural rapid appraisal. The low production plantation was induced by the low production output. The low profit plantation was induced by the high cost that is the cost of fertilizer and labour force. Moso bamboo plantation in the north of Zhengjiang is the low profit plantation, and in south of Zhejiang is the low production plantation. There are two factors resulted in low production and profit plantation: technology factors of cultivation and Non-technology of cultivation factors. Non-technical factors include: poor production condition, farmers negative, no advantage of market competition and faulty social services system, and so on. Technology of cultivation factors include: irrational product structure, technology deficiencies and unreasonable technology of management, and so on.. Accorrding to the theory of participatory technology development, the program made plans for improving profits of moso bamboo plantation by means of"ladder desiging". It is the key technology that optimizing bamboo plantation structure and the fertilization management in Longquan. At the same time, it is important to improve the traffic condition in bamboo management.2. The result is that the low production and profit bamboo plantation changed into the higher profit bamboo plantation by participation rural rapid appraisal. The statistic that soil fertilization, moso bamboo diameter and number were analyzed showed that fertilization balance was kept and woodland productivity was enhanced after we carried out the plans. After we carried on the plan, the average number of moso bamboo is 198, and the average perimeter increased by 2.1%, in the woodland that we build based on participatory rural rapid appraisal; compared with not to apply fertilizer, the average perimeter increased by 9.8%, bamboo shoot output increased averagely 1146.4%, bamboo timber output increasd averagely 94.9%, the profit increased averagely 84.2%, taking 2005-2006 year as example.3. After the road was builded in moso bamboo plantation, mang new changes occurred. The management technology was improved. It was rational when farmer choose the type of orientation cultivates. The proportion of farmers, who chose shoot-timber bamboo as type of orientation cultivates based on entironment and so on, was 58.3%. It is rational when farmer choose he type of orientation cultivates. The proportion of farmers, who chose shoot-timber bamboo as type of orientation cultivates based on environment and so on, is 58.3%. It was more scientific to apply a fertilizer. The proportion of applying fertilizer was 75% after building the road. The woodland productivity was enhanced. Bamboo timber output was more 2 times than before; and fresh bamboo shoot output was more 3 times than before. Because the cost of labour force was reduced, the farmer gained more and more benefit. The benefit was increased by 20%.
