The wild Chinese pennisetum with purple ear (Pennisetum alopecuroidea L.Spreng ) is increasingly becoming the grass of choice for road and slope protection due to its good tolerance to drought and barren and wild adaptaion. But the seed yield of Chinese wild pennisetum is low and cannot meet the large demand. The research on the germination trait and production technology of seed will provide available information for the exploiture and utilization of Chinese wild pennisetum resource. This study discussed the temperature and dryness time before sprouting of hull and dehull seed, and the characters of growth and production of Chinese wild pennisetum under different plant standards and nitrogen fertilizer levels. The main results are as follows:1. The seed treated under 25℃had the highest percentage germination, and the germination index was higher when seed were treated under 15℃, especially the dehull seed highest. While seed germination was inhibited under 30℃.2. The germination percentage and index significantly increased and the rate of mildew decreased when the dryness time was from 0 to 5 days. After five-day dryness the germination percentage and index decreased and the rate of mildew increased.3. The plant canopy and height increased and tiller number decreased under high density cultivation (30,000 roots and stems of certain plants / 667m~2). The high basic shoot counts (3 stem/ cave) cultivation caused the Chinese wild pennisetum plant canopy and height to increase and had no effect on tillering. But this single cultivation was favorable to the improvement of wild Chinese pennisetum seed output. Sparse cultivation tended to increase the chlorophyll content of Chinese wild pennisetum, and improve the tolerance at a certain extent.4. The wild Chinese pennisetum could survive with little management and was barren-tolerant. Nitrogen fertilizer application had no effect on the dry weight of seed and biomass, while the chlorophyll content increased with the increasing nitrogen fertilizer. There were three " J " type curves in the plant canopy increase during the development period. Three peaks appeared on July 25, August 28 and October 28, respectively. The dynamic curve of tiller had two peaks, presented on July 13 for the first time and August 13 the second time.
