In the urban landscape, shrubs are at the middle level. Similar to other plants, shrubs show the function of beautifying and improving environment, and they are ornamental plant landscape within the closest distance of line-of-sight. Some shrubs possess the special flowers, leave, fruits, branches, and shapes, which show deep impression to people. Therefore, improving the landscape color of cities can be realized by using the ornamental characteristics of shrubs. Now the varieties of shrubs applied in Shenyang city are single. Furthermore, the florescence mainly focuses in the spring or at the beginning of summer, and the color are also single. Therefore, in order to improve the varieties of shrubs in our city, introducing the ecdemic species were utilized. At the same time, selective applications were adopted in the tree herbarium park of Shenyang Academy of Landscape-gardening after selecting the suitable tree species. In 2001, 20 shrubs were began to be tested, which included the 15 shrubs (such as Paeonia papaveracea, Hibiscus syriacus, and so on) introduced from Peking, Lanchow, and Danton, and 5 native shrubs, such as Kolkwitzia amabilis, Rhodotypos scandens, and Euonymus alatus. During the phenology observation, all introducde shrubs showed good scence in four season. During the overwintering observation, the frozen resistance of shrubs was understood primarily. Lonicera korolkowii, Weigela florida cv. Pink, Symphoricarpos albus, and so on, showed no or slight frozen damage, but Forsythia koreana cv. Sun Gold, Prunus mume cv. Meirenmei, Viburnum chinshanense, and Rose'Mediland scarlet' showed severe frozen damage. During the growth performance observation, all the introduced shrubs grow fast beside Forsythia koreana cv. Sun Gold and Paeonia papaveracea Andr., and furthermore, Forsythia koreana cv. Sun Gold showed bad growth. During the cultivation and management, all introduced shrubs grew normal. During the disease and insect pest observation, Prunus×cistena, Prunus mume cv. Meirenmei, Rose'Mediland scarlet', had more disease or insect pest. During testing the conductivity of 20 shrubs, the frozen resistance was understood, and the results showed that whose half-died temperature was high the frosen resistance was good, such as Euonymus alatus (Thunb.) Sieb., Weigela florida cv. Pink Princess, whose half-died temperature was low the frosen resistance was bad, such as Prunus mume cv. Meirenmei, Viburnum chinshanense, Rose 'Mediland scarlet'. During the propagation of shrubs by using cuttaging, grafting, and generation culture, the most suitable propagation method was found, and 17 shrubs, such as Kolkwitzia amabilis, Euonymus alatus, Lonicera korolkowii, Physocarpus opulifolius cv. Darts Gold, Weigela florida cv. Pink Princess, and so on, were suitable to be propagated by using cutting method and the survival rate was high. For Prunus×cistena, Prunus mume cv. Meirenmei, which can be propagated by using grafting and the survival rate was high by using Prunus armeniaca var. ansu as rootstock. At the same time, Rose 'Mediland scarlet' was suitable to be propagated by using generation culture and the proliferation rate was high. Finally, the shrubs were extended to nursery field and afforestation projects, and the results showed that all the shrubs exhibited perfect performance. But Forsythia koreana cv. Sun Gold wasn't extended at last. For Paeonia papaveracea, Viburnum chinshanense, Rose 'Mediland scarlet', and Prunus mume cv. Meirenmei, which were suitable to be planted under frozen-proof, and Hibiscus syriacus, Weigela florida cv. Variegata was suitable to be planted under microclimate. For other 13 shrubs, which can be applied widely in the different city greening.
