In order to clarify the cause of "wasting disease"of goats in Lian Yungang area ofJiangsu province, and to instruct the goat production in this area, the contents of sometrace elements for example cobalt, cuprum and so on in the soil, water and goat maingrazing were investigated and analysed by the author; and the epidemiology, the clinicalsymptom, the pathological change of "wasting disease" of goat in Lian Yungang areawere investigated and observed; and the contents of some trace elements for examplecobalt, cuprum and so on in the goat blood serum, the liver and the wool sample, andindexes of blood PCV, Hb, WBC, RBC, MCV, MCHC, MCH and blood sugar weredetermined. Finally, three methods were used to conduct the treatment research to thediease. One was treated with COSO4 by oral administration, another was treated withVitamin B12 by injection administration, and a third was treated with CoSO4 by oraladministration+with Vitamin B12 by injection administration. The results showed that:In Lian Yungang area, the cobalt content of soils surpassed 3.0mg/kg, was equally4.90 mg/kg, belonged to the cobalt deficient suspicious or called marginal lacks thecobalt area. Although thus it could be seen that this local soil cobalt content hadachieved the goat life request, the risk of the cobalt deficiency morbidity was existent. The cobalt average content in local goat main grazings was 0.064 mg/kg, cannotsatisfy goat's growth well. The reasons were that in the local soil pH leaning alkalinity, the organic content being slightly high, the manganese content being higher than thenormal reference value and so on, hindered the grazings to absorb the cobalt from thesoil. In this area, the disease incidence rate of this disease was 4.5%~20.5%, and the casefatality rate was 38%~56%. The disease incidence rate and the case fatality rate had certain relations with goat's variety, the age, the season, the year and the raising fashion. It was manifested as that the disease incidence rate and the case fatality rate of thelocal goats were lower than of the exotic and the hybrid variety goats, and it was takenmainly concentrates in 4~12 month old goat and the case fatality rate was also high, andthe morbidity sheep concentrated in April to September, the case fatality rate alsoobviously was higher than other months, and in the rain excessively many year, thedisease incidence rate in Spring and summer was high and the case fatality rate werealso high, and the disease incidence rate and the case fatality rate with extensivestalls-feed raise were higher than herd freely or fine stall-feed raise. The union the ultimate analyzed in the soil and goat main grazing; the epidemiology, the clinical symptom, and the pathological change observed; the trace elementdetermined in the sheep blood serum, the liver and the wool sample; these indexes ofblood PCV, Hb, WBC, RBC, MCV, MCHC, MCH and blood sugar determined, thecause of "wasting disease" of goats in Lian Yungang area of Jiangsu province mightbeen diagnose as the cobalt deficiency. The treatment experiment indicated that three methods with CoSO4 by oraladministration, with Vitamin B12 by injection administration, or with CoSO4 by oraladministration+with Vitamin B12 by injection administration had the obvious treatmentfunction all. Moreover the method with CoSO4 by oral administration+with VitaminB12 by injection administration was most obvious. It had further proven the morbidityreason of "wasting disease" of goats in Lian Yungang area of Jiangsu province was thecobalt deficiency.
