Cotton is a main economic crop in world. Cotton fiber growing from the epidermis cells of cottonseed is very important valuable to textile industry. Gossypol is a yellow matter of polyphenol distributing in the frond, seeds and all of tissues of cotton. As a concept of people for long time, it is a kind of poisonous trash. However, cotton polyphenol as a kind of plant protecting substance existing generally in cotton genus plays important part in insect resistance and growth, moreover, dissoluble amylose is the common reactive substance of cotton polyphenol and cellulose in metabolism. Therefore probing the effect of cotton polyphenol to fiber development is of importance to improve yield and insect resistance in cotton breeding. But, a few of reports concerning study on the gossypol were advanced so far.This experiment determined the physiological and biological indexes with the cotton growth, analyzed the content of gossypol in cottonseed and the change of POD and PAL activeness in cottonseed of 5 varieties of cotton, and then analyzed all of the data with Grey Relationship Analysis. The results showed as follows:(1) Based on analyses of qualities of physics and chemistry, the kinds and content of polyphenol of cottonseed in the color cotton varieties were little different from ones of other cotton varieties. It suggested that the methods of separating and determining the content of gossypol of the common cotton varieties be used in color cotton ones.(2) The color cotton varieties, especially the green cotton, were different from the common cotton and low gossypol cotton ones. And the length of fiber of color cotton varieties were shorter than ones of Simian III and low gossypol cotton.(3) The Grey Relationship Analysis between the content of gossypol and other physiological and biological indexes with the cotton growth showed that the content of gossypol was negative correlation with fiber growth. The color cotton varieties which were different from Simian III had a little content of gossypol in the fiber developing, but much gossypol in the fiber ripeness. So the content of gossypol could be controlled to adjust the growth of fiber.(4) The results of Grey Relationship Analysis showed that PAL was important to the gossypol synthesis and there was positive correlation between PAL and gossypol, especially in brown cotton the relative coefficient was 0.994851.From those as above, cotton fiber growth, gossypol synthesization and their relationship had been discussed which will provide theoretic foundation and experimental gist for breeding scientists to improve fiber quality, insect resistance and compositive using of gossypol in cotton breeding.
