Effect of selenium on the germination of rice seed was studied and the results showed that selenium stimulated rice seed germination significantly. Difference in stimulation existed in different cultivars. Selenium stimulated seed germination at lower levels but inhibited at higher levels. Also, difference in sensitivity existed between root and sprout. Selenium stimulated root much more than sprout. Na2SeO3 treatment increased amylase activity and root activity, stimulated root growth, improved the content of soluble sugar, free amino acid and soluble protein. Na2SeO4 treatment stimulated root growth and root activity, but exsisted little effect on amylase activity and the content of soluble sugar, free amino acid and soluble protein. Na2SeO4 and Na2SeO3 significantly improve rice seeds phosphorus, zinc, manganese, boron, magnesium transit and rice seedlings, the absorption of these elements significantly inhibit the absorption of rice seedling to copper Na2SeO4 has halted, rice grain to shoot and root of copper in transit, but in Na2SeO3 promoted rice seed of bronze and iron Na2SeO4 inhibit transhipment, outside of iron transshipment. Accordling to these results as above, it was proposed that selenite stimulation in rice seed germination contributed much more to the translocation of nutrients from rice seeds than increasing amylase activity.
