Chenopodium foetidum is an annual herb of height 20-60 cm with glandular and glandular hairs and very strong smell. It grows in an altitude of 2700-4500 m in the forest edge, riverside, and farms as a weed. Records shows that it has medicinal value which is not known as us. Essential oil from Chenopodium foetidum was extracted under different conditions, the composition and antibacterial activity of essential oil were also tested and analyzed. The main results are following:1. In the process of oil extraction, the best ratio of solid to liquid was1:25 with refluxing for 4 hours. Among different parts of the whole plant, essential oil from the flower section of Chenopodium foetidum reached up to 8.4ml/kg which was the most. At the same time, the yield of essential oil by fresh material was more than that by dry powder.2. The GC-MS analysis of the essential oil resulted in 52 compounds, making up 86.2% of the total composition. The most abundant constituents of the oil were aliphatic compounds(54.232%) and terpenoids with their oxygenated derivatives(31.945%), followed bya-Cadinol(13.966%), Hedycaryol(11.164%), δ-Cadinene(7.292%),tau.-Cadinol(6.779%),1-Hydroxy-1,7-dimethyl-4-isopropyl-2,7-cyclodeca diene(5.659%), Longifolene(2.727%) and Globulol(2.587%). Among terpenoids, monoterpenes made up 5.099% of the total andsesquiterpenoids made up 26.846%. It is also notable that the essential oil consist of other valuable active ingredients such as perilla alcohol, β-Ionol and Citral.3. The essential oil of Chenopodium foetidum was proved to have obviously effect on inhibiting the growth of both bacteria. Compared with E. coli, the inhibition on B. subtilis was much more significant. This research studied on extraction of essential oil from Chenopodium foetidum and antibacterial activity, which could provide scientific reference for the utilization of Chenopodium foetidum widely in the future.
