ObjectiveInsomnia is defined as the difficulty ofinitialing or maintaining sleep that results in daytime impairments, such as fatigue, sleepiness, changes in mood, lose of concentration, as well as changes in one’s social performance and family relationships. It is a highly prevalent health problem and associated with considerable morbidity.In western country, several treatments, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic, exist for the management of insomnia.However, as the unwished side effects of the drugs and the poor maneuverability of CBT-I limit their application,they are not efficacious enough to release the patients who suffer from insomnia. The management is not satisfied.Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) has a long splendid history of treating insomnia.there are a various of effective ways to cure it. With a rich knowledge and clinical experiences, Professor Shi Jing has developed an unique insights in treating insomnia through liver. In order to get a access from her experience, Idiscuss her academic thoughts of treating insomnia through liver and summarize the characteristics of her prescription law in this articleMethodThe medical records of chronic insomnia from Professor Shi’s outpatients are collected.Then, with SAS 9.3,a frequency analysis is applied to find the commonly used medicines and medicine category. A factor analysis and cluster analysis of high frequency medicines follows to explore the interrelationship of different medicines in the prescriptions.ResultIn 141 prescriptions of chronic insomnia, it involves a total of 148 drugs.28 medicines are chosen for the high frequency medicines.70% of which are using for maintaining liver. They are usually prescribed as 8 assembles.ConclusionIn TCM, soul is a subtype of spirit, and blood is their material basis. Because liver stores blood, it houses soul as well. Soul follows blood returning to liver so one fall asleep during the night. If liver was disturbed by pathogenic qi or less nourished by blood, it could not function well, leading to a disorder of soul’s movement, whenthe insomnia occurs.By the theory of diagnosing and treating insomnia through liver, there are 5 major syndrome types of it. They are liver qi stagnation syndrome, liver depression transforming into fire syndrome, liver yang hyperactivity syndrome, liver blood deficiency syndrome, liver-kidney vin deficiency syndrome.Accordingly, the therapeutic principles should be relieving liver qi stagnation, using buplerum, bitter orange, curcuma, clearing liver for purging pathogenic fire, using coptis, scutellaria, soothing liver and anchoring yang, using keel, oyster, pearl shell, nourishing blood and smoothing liver, using spine date seed, fleece-flower stem, peony root, nourishing liver and kidney, using pulp of cornus, prepared radix rehmanniae and eucommiaulmoides.Besides, there are some common compatibility patterns to assist the treatment of insomnia through liver, such as strengthening spleen and replenishing qi, nourishing yin, promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis.
