[Objective] To establish the gas chromatography analysis method for determination of dipropyl ketone (4-heptanone) in the air using sampling by activated charcoal tube.[Methods] Adsorption on charcoal then solvent desorption and analysis by gas chromatography flame ionization detector (FID) were performed. It could be qualified with the retention time and quantified by peak areas.[Results] The relative standard deviation (RSD) for the whole analysis method in the range of23.3-2330mg/m3was3.8%-5.1%. The recovery was between96.4to97.7%. The average recovery was97.2%. Regression formula was y=225.28x-2505.8, r>0.9999. Determination limit was4.6μg/ml (injection for1.0μl). The average desorption efficiency was92.7%. The breakthrough volume (BTV) was more than25mg (100mg activated charcoal). After adsorbed706.7μg of dipropyl ketone with the charcoal tube, it was stabilized for7day, the decay rate was8.7%. The sampling efficiencies were100%. The dipropyl ketone was separated from some substances such as benzene and its homologue, butyl acetate, isomers of4-heptanone and so on by gas chromatography under the experimental conditions.[Conclusion] The results indicated that the quantitative GC method might be used to determine gaseous dipropyl ketone in the air of workplace.
