Xi’s Reading notes of Shuowen was written by Xi Shichang, a scholar in Qing dynasty. This book is made up of fifteen texts in accordance with the order of Shuowen. It covers1726entries, and its radicals of Chinese characters are before the words. There is a preface written by Huang Tingjian in Jiaqing twenty years and four introductory remarks before the body of the book, namely Shuzheng, Bulou, Jiuwu, Yiyi. This book is aimed at rectifying errors of transcription by calibrating true ancient characters.This paper analyzed all of the entries in Xi’s Reading notes of Shuowen and it is divided into five chapters.The introduction includes three aspects. Section one is a brief introduction to the origin of the selected topic. Section two is the current academic circles on Xi’s Reading notes of Shuowen based on the present research situation and trend. Section three is the research methods.The first chapter is the overview of Xi’s Reading notes of Shuowen. Section one introduces Xi Shichang’s life and family. Section two describes the writing purpose, forming process and the version of this book. Section three describes the style and characteristics of the bibliography, thereinto, the style is divided into choreography style and commentary style.The second chapter is the study of Shuowen in this book, including four section. The first section is Shuzheng. Xi Shichang inherited the textual research tradition in Qing dynasty and quoted at a large number of text annotations of historical materials, from which we can do up the paraphrase basis, which are the classical literature handed down from ancient times, the evidences and word books, stone materials, dialect, etiquette, the established rules and other materials. The second section is Bulou. One is to supplement annotation of Shuowen, the other is to supplement entries without in Shuowen. The third section is Jiuwu, including entries that did have evidence to prove future generations’ wrong cases and error characters in the Six Classics. The fourth section is Yiyi, listing explanations of words in ancient books from Ma Rong, Zheng Xuan etc. The third chapter is about ideas of philology in Xi’s Reading notes of Shuowen, including two section. Section one is the theory of mother and son, which is aimed at provincial and derivatives. The theory has two types. In general, Xi’s classification is easy to understand and is not complex, but it is lack of systematic and deep going. Section two is about variant Chinese characters. Xu Shen despised succeeding common words and didn’t take these words into Shuowen. In order to improve the shortcomings, Xi’s Reading notes of Shuowen paid more attention to common words.The fourth chapter is achievements and limitations about Xi’s Reading notes of Shuowen. Section one is the accomplishment, including four aspects. Section two is the limitations, including three aspects.
