Objective:To investigate the health and social support of empty nest elderly in rural areas of Sishui town.Method:1)This study enrolled158elderly including82empty nest elderly living in the rural areas of Sishui town.2) The selected residents were investigated by using self-made General information questionnaire, Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS)and Social Support Rating Scale(SSRS).3)A11the date was analyzed by using the SPSS17.0. Using descriptive analysis to describe the empty nest elderly’s chronic disease rate depression and social support situation. Using correlation analysis to analysis the correlation of empty nest elderly’s depression status and chronis disease rate with it’s social support.Results:1)The chronic disease rate of empty-nest group is94.0%which was higher than non-empty nest group.2)The average GDS score of empty-nest group was(11.06±4.64), which was higher than the average GDS score(8.92±3.59) of non-empty-nest group (p<0.01).3)The average SSRS score of empty-nest group was (30.11±4.35), it was higher than non-empty-nest group(37.20±4.17)(t=-10.443P<0.01), and which was statistically significant.4) The average SSRS score in different age groups were lower than the non-empty-nest group for the elderly, the difference was statistically significant. The difference was statistically significant(t=-7.205、-6.290、-5.313; P<0.01).5) The differences in the aspects of subjective support and support utilization scores showed statistically significant(P<0.01).6) For the "empty nest" elderly group, the prevalence rate of chronic disease and social support is negatively correlated. the coefficient of-0.0048(P<0.01), the depression and SSRS score.is negatively correlated, the coefficient of-0.370(P<0.01).Conclusion:The results suggested that the depression rate and chronic disease rate is high among empty nest elderly in rural areas. Specific and effective measures need to be taken to promote the health and life quality.
