Deep-water irrigation experiments in mid-early term of later rice was conducted during July 24 ~ September 8.(2001) Experimental site was Taoyuan agro-ecological experiment station, which belong to typical double-cropping rice region in hilly red soil area. Depth of irrigation was 20cm, 15cm, 10cm, 5cm, respectively. Dynamics of total water consumption per day and three important variable of water consumption, that were leakage, water transpiration and evaporation were measured in experimental plot and three micro-plots. At the same time, ratios of three water consumption variables in different growth phase were analyzed. Some valuable conclusions were drawn just for giving some references:1. Temperature was the most important factor that influenced the water consumption. Therefore, high temperature surroundings in mid-early term of late rice determined that late rice leaned to drought, and attempts of deep-water irrigation has realistic significance for water reservation and avoiding drought.2. Deep-water irrigation in c of late rice would increase the water leakage, but decrease the water evaporation. Total water consumptions per day were equal in different irrigation depth.3. Seen from water consumption way, deep-water irrigation in mid -early term of late rice increased the supply of underground water. Just on the contrary, shallow-water irrigation increased the supply of vapor in atmosphere.4. Implementing waterproof measurements would decrease the leakage amount of water, which may offset the negative effects of deep water irrigation, And those measurements are practicable in red hilly region.5. Deep-water irrigation in mid-early period has not significant effects on the yield of the studied late rice.6. Deep-water irrigation in mid-early period makes use of the paddy field function of potential reservoir, which would weaken the seasonal drainage in fall.
