Based on reviewing of the available achievements in seed production of hybrid rice made in both China and abroad, the principles and technology of hybrid rice seed production were elucidated in this article, and the comprehensive system of seed production was proposed according to the experience obtained through long-term practice and productive characterization. The main issues being analyzed and discussed are as follows:1. The primary principles of seed production for hybrid japonica rice was analyzed, and the main hybrid combinations being widely planted in local areas were characterized in terms of growth and development, which may provide useful information for guiding seed production of other hybrid combinations and different seasons.2. A new combination of hybrid japonica rices Jiayou 1 was taken as an example to be intensively investigated regarding its seed production system, so as to provide some references for seed production of other hybrid rice combinations.3. High temperature tolerance of hybrid japonica rice was studied. Two CMS (so called three-line hybrid) hybrid japonica rices, being widely plant in Hangzhou, Huzhou, Jiaxing and Southern Jiangsu were selected as materials for the study of high temperature tolerance during grain filling. The purpose was to determine the potential advantages and disadvantages in the parents and their combinations of hybrid rice. It would provide important evidences for developing reasonable practices of high-yield cultivation and selecting the new combinations of CMS hybrid japonica rice.4. The positive experiences of seed production of hybrid japonica rice in Zhuji were extracted and the cultivation technology for high yield and quality were summarized, which may provide valuable suggestions and indications for stabilizing and promoting rice production in Zhuji.
