There are 15 mulberry species and 4 varieties in China. We have collected 208 pieces of germ plasm of mulberry from 45 county of Yunnan province. The 208 pieces of mulberry germ plasm were classified into 11 mulberry species and 2 varieties through planting, observation, identification and classification for many years. It showed that Yunnan province owns the largest mulberry germ plasm in China. In this program,We had observed the growth of wild mulberry and had elementary appraised of 12 pieces of wild mulberry's utilizing .l-deoxynojirimycin(DNJ) in mulberry leaves can be used for treating diabetes, adiposity and virus infection etc. In this program, a improved high performance liquid chromatographic method for the determination of DNJ in mulberry leaves with fluorescence detection after pre-column derivatization was developed. The result showed that the pertinence was good between the result of examination and practical data during 0.5~20μg , (the correlation coefficient was 0.999879, the calibration curve was y=96600x+1440). the limit of detection was 0.01mg / L, the average recovery was 90.9%, Relatively Standard Deviation(RSD) was 2.21 %(n=5). Which is easy to handle and the ramifications are stable. We have been obtained approving effect for the determination of DNJ in mulberry leaves. But up to now, there is no report about the difference in the content of DNJ between different mulberry species or varieties. The content of DNJ in mulberry leaves of 12 species was investigated in this program through this method for first time in China, The result showed that the content of DNJ is different in different species. In kaiyuanMengsang, the content of DNJ is much more than that in shuisang, kaiyuanguisang, hekouchangshuisang, and which are much more than the other 8 species', but there is not much difference during the other species. So we can use kaiyuanMengsang, shuisang, kaiyuanguisang and hekouchangshuisang as the resource of DNJ.
