Qinling Mountains is an important forest area in China, and a significant water resource conserving area in Chinese central part. The woodland area accounts for 15.2%, and it has an important function on the soil and water resource conservation. The protection and restoration of the degenerating vegetation not only affects the environmental improvement of ecosystem and economic development of society in the area, but also the safety of aquatic environment, water quality and flow in Guanzhong and the middle line of south - to - north water transfer project in China. The water conservation function of vegetation ecosystem and spatial distribution pattern were analyzed, based on function and spatial distribution pattern that is hotspot of landscape ecology and forest hydrology, choosing vegetation-soil-slop complex in Qinling Mountains area of Shaanxi as research object, using GIS software such as Arcview3.2/ArcGis8.12, thinking over the levels of the macro-, meso-, and small scales. At the same time, a strategy for ecosystem conservation was proposed. The conclusion showed:(1) As a whole, the environment of this area is well. Meanwhile, the natural forest has been destructed and changed by farm, grass, and shrub little by little. In the result, the water retention of vegetation of the united area in the Qinling Mountains 's north slop is higher than the south slop, and the water conservation function of ecosystem has been severely affected by intense mans activity.(2) The water resource conserving function of vegetation is vitally related with the types of soil, vegetation and slop. The variation-location effect index showed that the biggest performance will be obtained under the limited area expanding, through extending the forest area and making use of the influence of the woodland space structure on the ecosystem effect. In the result, the variation-location effect of vegetation in the Qinling Mountains 's north slop is lower than the south slop.(3) The strategy for ecosystem conservation based on function and spatial pattern was proposed, that useing the improvement of ecosystem function as appreciation indices, and the regulation of the spatial pattern of ecological factors as an approach. Therecarch work may be an essential step to the ecosystem restoration, conservation and management in the Qinling Mountains.(4) The upscaling in the scaling courses can reserve the more detail informations, show the intrinsic influence of small scale on macroscale, and it is an effective method in the research of landscape ecology and forest hydrology. In terms of the spatial distribution pattern for water conservation function, the strategy was proposed for scientist managing environment in Qinling Mountains.
