As a major export agricultural product in Shanxi, yield and quality of kidney bean play an important role for its competition on the market, which have close connection with planting density. At present, no systematic studies in this aspect have been reported yet. The paper reported the results from the experiment in which English red kidney bean was grown in the field on Loess Plateau under 6 different planting densities. Effects of planting density on seed yield and quality, yield components, yield-forming factors, biomass production were analyzed by means of the analysis of variance, regression analysis, path analysis and curve fitting. Major findings are as follows: (1).Economic yield-density relation presented parabola equation; pod number-density relation showed a linear increasing; seed number-density and 100-seed weight-density ,sharply linear falling relation; biological yield-density, advance gradually to the number; economic coefficient-density, exponential decay curve and empty pods percentage-density exponential growth curve. (2).Leaf area index was about 2.89; LAD was about 17,1500 m2·d/hm 2; NAR was about 1.95g/m2·d; source—sink ratio was about 0.0316 and economic coefficient about 0.3815, the yield was about 2162.94kg/hm2. (3).The density was 220,000 plants/ hm2; pods number was 1363,900 per unit hm; seed number was 3.81 per pod; 100-seed weight was 50.59g. under the conditions, it was the best yield structure. (4).With the increase of density, the ratio of certified seed, the seed density and fat content gradually decline; the protein content advance. There no apparent difference about P and K content under different density. (5).According to the path analysis, factor ranks in direct contribution of the factors to the yield were as follows: pods number>seed number>100—seed weight.
