The main objective of this study was to design planting plan of forage crops to supply green forages to beefcattle around the year in Jiangxi Province Seven species of forage crops were selected as the green forages to feed beefcattle according to their nutritive value and yield.They included Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L),corn(Zea mays L.), Chinese milk vetch(Astragalus sinicus L), dwarf elephant grass(Pennisetum purpureum Shchumach.), King grass(P. purpureum X P. typhoides Hybrid), Guimu NO. 1 elephant grass(Pennisetum purpureum cv. Guimu-1),lobed kudzuvine(Pueraria lobata(Willd. )0hwi var lobata).Rice straw, ammoniated rice straw,sweet potato vine, rice bran and cottonseed meal were use as supplements. High yield cultivation techniques of these seven forage crops were briefed. Cash input and labor input for these crops were calculated.A study was conducted to investigate the effect of ammoniated rice straw to feed beefcattle. In comparison with that of the rice straw, the N content of ammoniated rice straw was 63. 7% higher,content of crude fiber was 4. 2% lower, the intake of dry matter was 14% higher, the intake of rice straw dry matter was 21.8% higher. The digestibility of dietary dry matter,N and crude fiber were increased 13.3%,11.00% and 20. 2% respectively.The daily liveweight gain was increased 33. 3%.The cost of ammoniating of rice straws is 7. 13-12.44 yuan/50 kilograms and the labor input was 0. 7h/50 kilograms.Two types of forage planting pattern were adopted. In planting model, only corn, Italian ryegrass and Chinese milk vetch were planted. Both annual grass(corn, Italian ryegrass and Chinese milk vetch)and perennial grasses(dwarf elephant grass, king grass, Guimu No. 1 elephant grass and lobed kudzuvine)were planted in planting model 2. Forage crop planting plans to supply green forages to satisfy the requirements of 5,20 and 40beefcattles with three levels(0. 4kg, 0. 8dg and 1.2kg)of daily liveweight gain were designed.In order to calculate the seeding area and seed date of each forage crop, the daily and monthly nutritive requirements of beefcattle with different daily liveweight gains were calculated. Then, the dietary components were calculated with the method of linear programming optimization based on the nutritive value and price of each green forage andsupplement . The seeding area and seed date were determined according to the requirements of beefcattle. Considering high yielding cultivation techniques were still not popular, medium yield level of each forage crop was used in the design of the planting plan. In addition to the Jiangxi Province, the forage planting plans, which aimed to supply green forages to beefcattle around the year, designed in this study can be used by the fanners in the lower and middle reaches of Yangtze River as well as other subtropical regions.
