Coptis chinensis Franch is a type of shade plant.lt has formed the characteristic of liking weak light and hating strong light. Its long-term life is spent in fully shaded and damp environments. There have been no reports on the systematic study of the influence of shadingon the physiological -biochemical charactereristic of Coptis chinensis Franch. This thesis is on the study of the influence of shading on the morphological, reproductive and physiological - biochemical traits. A viable technical measure could be found to improve the quantity and quality of Coptis chinensis Franch accordingly and form a set for the academic base. The following is the main result of the study.1. The relationship between the shading and morphologic index of Coptis Chinensis FranchThe previous study showed that the plant height in shading is higher than that in light. But the fact is that there is no obvious inhibition when Coptis chinensis Franch grows in the light. There is however a great difference for the specific leaf area and the result is that with much shading the leaf area is greater. Thus ,the leaves improve their efficiency of capturing the sun's solar radiance. As far as the Coptis chinensis Franch, a five year old's root stalk is longer in full light.2.The relationship between the shading and photosynthesis and mass accumulation index of Coptis Chinensis FranchThe water content in a leaf increases along with the increase of shading. Compared with the water content in the root, the water content in a root is remarkably larger than that in a leaf, and the change in scope is more evident here than in a leaf. The change rule is consistent for the specific leaf area and the saturation water content. The water content in a leaf increases in portion to the increase in shading. The ratio of chl a to chl b is from 2 to 3 for the common shaded leaf, but the ratio is below 2 for the relationship between the shading and morphologic index of Coptis Chinensis Franch, and even sometimes the ratio is below 1.2. It is obvious that the Coptis Chinensis Franch canstrongly thrive in shaded environments. The shading influences are different on the soluble sugar content in the rootstalk, fibrous root, and the leaf. The soluble sugar content increases along with the shading for the fibrous root and leaf. But as far as the rootstalk , the result does not change. The free amino acids content increases also along with the level of shading.3.The relationship between the shading and antixoxidant ability of Coptis Chinensis FranchThe demand for shading is different for the different ages of Coptis Chinensis Franch. It is obvious that the change rule is consistent for the MDA content, SOD activity and POD activity in root. The SOD and POD activity reach their peak at the 30% shading level and the MDA content, electric conductance, POD and SOD activity reach their lowest in the three-year old Coptis Chinensis Franch. This shows that the shading above and below 60% raises different-degrees of menace, and the plant counteracts the menace through increasing the SOD and POD activity, at the same time the electric conductance increases. The electric conductance ,MDA content,CAT activity reach their lowest at the 45% shading level for the four-year old Coptis Chinensis Franch .And the SOD and POD activity reach their lowest at 60% shading. The electric conductance is least in foil light for the five-year old Coptis Chinensis Franch .And the SOD and POD content in a root and leaf is least at 30% and 45% shading accordingly. The SOD and POD activity is least in full light and the CAT activity is least at 75% shading. The CAT ,POD and SOD activity are not consistent. Perhaps because of the low temperature. And the CAT is sensitive to the cold.4. The relationship between the shading and berberine content of Coptis Chinensis FranchThe highest berberine content is at the 60% shading for the three-year old Coptis Chinensis Franch and the least content is at 30% shadingThe highest berberine content is 45% shading for the four-year Coptis Chinensis Franch and foil light for the five-year old Coptis Chinensis Franch.5. The correlation analysisThere is a prominent wondrously positive correlation between the root dry weight and root fresh weight, and prominent wondrously negative correlation between saturation water content and specific leaf area. There is a prominent wondrously positive correlation between Ci and chl b and chl(a+b). The chl a is positively correlated with the chl(a+b). The photosynthesis is positively correlated with Gs but negatively correlated with Ci. The electric conductance is positively wondrously correlated with the protein content in rootstalk and leaf. This shows that the adverse environment injures the cell and the antioxidant enzyme activity improved but the berberine content decreased. This is maybe because of the enzyme that is correlated with the berberine synthesization.
