It needs a lot of fields to investigate and collect the material to work with the routine methods to study afforestation site, not only consuming time and money, but also having enough problems from data reliability and material timely. For example, for the low precision of investigating data, the big error, upgraded data, inquiring about slowly etc. In the article, taking Zhifanggou watershed of Ansai county as an example, afforestation site is investigated and analyzed adopting remote sensing and geographic information system technology. Especially study on afforestation site type mapping by remote sensing and afforestation site information management system. Its main achievements are as following:1. The criteria and leading factors about dividing site types are proposed. Afforestation site classification system of Zhifanggou watershed is established according to surveying and remotely sensed data. It is divided into 3 site type groups, (girder site type group, gully slope and gully bottom site type groups), 32 site types in total, which essentially reflects the afforestation site situation of Zhifanggou watershed.2. The database of afforestation site background is created. The 1:10000 afforestation site type map is compiled, which include 396 units. Making clear by area statistical analysis, girder site type group area is 35.67% and gully slope site type group occupies half more the whole watershed area, reaching 61.13%, proving it is main. Gully bottom site type group accounts for 2.16% of the whole watershed area. These achievements made for carrying on Ansai county afforestation planning and designing offer basic data material afterwards.3. The afforestation site information management system in Zhifanggou watershed is designed and found. On the basis of above-mentioned research work, adopting module thought of designing program and utilizing structural design principle top-down to develop, using object-oriented compiling language Visual Basic 6.0 and MapX 4.01.51 component product of ActiveX from Maplnfo corporation develop afforestation site information management system (FSIMS). This system is composed of attribute data management, map data management, applying modules and information export management 4 sub-systems, working separately between every sub-system, having strengthened systematic independence, managing and safety systematically. They combine as a whole organically at the same time. We can input, store, inquire about, browse, statistical analysis, export, analyze map information, make site type theme, evaluate site types etc. The system has friendly interfaces, strong practicability, simple operation, conveniently etc.4. On the basis of collecting relevant field knowledge and expertise, point out the developing direction of shelter forest system construction of Zhifanggou watershed. That is, girder site type group relies mainly on developing water and soil conservation woods, economic forest for complementing. Gully slope site type group relies mainly on developing water and soil conservation woods and firewood, the economic forest is subordination. Gully bottom site type group relies mainly on developing the economic forest and commercial forest.
