On May 12, 2008, an earthquake 8.0 degree took place in Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province. The earthquake caused an utmost loss to the education system. In this disaster the group suffered most is student (in primary and secondary schools) as it was school time when the earthquake took place. Astonishing number of school collapsed making the students suffered heavy casualties. According to statistics, in Sichuan Province there are about 13,779 schools damaged in the earthquake, covering a building area of about 24,899,600m2, totally 19,065 students died.In face of such tragic lessons of pain, we, as planning and construction personnel, must recognize the force majeure of nature on the one hand, and must review from the perspective of ourselves on the other hand have the schools we planned, designed and constructed offered adequate protection to those young lives? Thus, in the reconstruction process of primary and secondary schools, some major issues concerning the education development in the disaster area such as what to reconstruct and how to reconstruct scientifically and so forth have been laid ahead of us imperatively. In addition, reconstruction of primary and secondary schools is not only repairing and reengineering for a group of secure hardware, but also a great revolution in education. Reconstruction is an activity of both restoring and recovery, and also regeneration and renascence as well as innovation and creation. Seen from ideas and targets of reconstruction, reconstruction should embody certain forward-looking, as it is not a simple clone to the past but to upgrade, surpass, create on the existing basis for a higher level of development. This paper firstly describes the background of the study, defines the concept and scope as well as the purpose and significance for the study of primary and secondary school buildings. It analyzes the status quo of above said buildings in the disaster area based on the definition of study scopes in Chapter I, and then summarizes home and abroad experiences in reconstruction of school buildings after disasters. In addition, it brings forward the design principles and targets from two aspects for the reconstruction, i.e. the safety of buildings and how to adapt to the times, laying a research basis for the design strategies in the following two chapters. At last, this paper puts forward specific design measures for reconstruction of primary and secondary school buildings, with reference to theoretical analysis and examples at home and abroad, with a view to provide some guidance to the architectural design work for primary and secondary school buildings after the disaster.
