It is an effective kind method of diagnosing faults of 10kV XLPE cable to use osillating voltage detecting partial discharge on. But the voltage range of osillating voltage to detecting partial discharge is need more and more study to prove it suit for 10kV XLPE cable. Tatistic and analysis of XLPE power cable operation faults are made in this paper. The main faults which occur more frequently and most harmfully to 10kV XLPE cable are find out, but the damage of outside force.Base models according to the main faults are made in the partial discharge test under power frequency voltage. The results show the initial discharge voltage of the base models. The electric field intensity around the base models are computed based on the finite element method when loaded on the initial discharge voltage.Because of the initial discharge voltage under osillating voltage is similar with that under power frequency voltage, so the electric fields are same under the two kind voltages. In order to compute the electric field of the defective cable, simulation model is made. Using finite element method, the electric field is computed when defective cable loaded on diffenrent voltage. The results show the initial discharge voltage of the cable with main faults. The initial discharge voltage is less than the the maximum osillating voltage. So osillating voltage could detect the main fault of cable. In field test, several defective cables is made to detect partial discharge. The results proved the analysis were right. Osillating voltage is suitable for detecting the main fault of cable.
